Free World is a contemporary art installation that explores the rap poetry of six young people from Liberia, Sudan and Tanzania.

Free World will illuminate Federation Square with the experience of resettlement, raw personal histories and the desire for change. In sharp contrast to the mass messages of advertising, logos and commercial signage of central Melbourne, Free World brings the words, images and music of emerging artists from pan-African backgrounds to centre stage. Free World is poetry with a pulse.

With a reverent nod to American artist Jenny Holzer, the poetry in Free World is presented as moving text on two opposing sides of a giant glowing cube. Black and white video portraits move at a slow walking pace across the cube's remaining sides. The installation invites the viewer to move around the cube and experience the poetry as images, sound and text.

Free World is an outcome of a three year community cultural development project run by the Arts and Culture Program of North Richmond Community Health Limited. Embedded in the Richmond high-rise public housing community, this unique program is committed to the principles of cultural democracy and the creation of powerful cross cultural artwork that reaches broad audiences.

Free World features the rap poetry of Dismas Christopher aka Peace Child Soldier, William Manhom aka Big W, Sabrina Ater, Mores B, Korboi Zarwue aka Coolness, and C.J. (aged 16 to 23).

Free World is conceived and directed by Liss Gabb and created in collaboration with Rick Randall, Joe Warburton aka Motley, Mary Quinsacara aka MC Que, Blair Hart, and Traffic Light.
